It is no secret that being a woman in the world, let alone in the world of science, is an uphill battle. Many great female minds have already made brilliant discoveries. There are no doubt brilliant female minds that will discover far more.
Given the challenges in research, there are ways that we can support those brilliant female scientists as they make these important discoveries.
Coaches and Allies
The simplest thing to do is for those who have come before to provide the coaching and mentorship that we all need in our lives. Brilliant female scientific minds are no different. Finding an ally, a mentor who is also a scientific cohort, can give them the freedom and drive needed to make those significant discoveries.
Women Speakers
This goes for those who are organizing sessions at a conference. It is imperative to have women both speaking and on the committee. There is nothing more empowering for young female scientific minds than to see other women in a position of success and power.
Nominations
Ensuring that women have a fair chance at receiving prestigious awards can be a great way to ensure that their contributions are seen. Having a certain number of women nominated for specific awards can also be helpful. It doesn’t matter the level, either, ranging from postdoctoral associates to established collaborators.
Cite Work
There are far too many instances of necessary research being done by females and not cited. Make sure to promote the work of those female researchers by citing their papers, inviting them to give presentations on their findings, and talking about their work.
Leadership Positions
Another great way to support women scientists is to nominate them for leadership positions on research committees and within the workplace. That can include not only professional organizations but also editorial roles. When great scientific women are in power, they inspire others from afar and promote greater gender equality in the field.
